On tuesday after conducting our first dolphin tour of the season at the northend of Virginia Beach I had the fortunate opportunity to meet two guys making an incredible journey on Standup Paddleboards.  Now halfway through their tour,  Mike Simpson and Will Rich are paddling from Key West Florida to Portland Maine hoping to raise money and awareness for two great causes, Wounded Warrior Project and SUP Cleanup.  Visit their website for details at www.supthecoast.com.  You can also track their daily movements via the website, and let me tell you, these guys are covering some serious ground paddling 20-30 miles each day.  I was loading my kayak trailer when Anne Gasset, a friend and local SUP standout, walked by with some lunch from Taste Unlimited.  She told me she was delivering the goods to the SUPthecoast.com paddlers she recently met before they continued on their epic journey. So when we went down to the beach, she introduced me to them.  Thanks Anne.  Mike and Will are great people and are making  an incredible statement with their fundraising effort by paddling the entire East Coast of the United States.  I urge everyone to make a donation in support of their cause.

We are now running our dolphin kayak tours, daily at 9am.  The dolphins have arrived and we are really excited to get out there and see them up close.  There is nothing like being within arms length of these amazing creatures, truly an experience you will never forget.

Chesapean is proud to announce their sponsorship of The VBLA PADDLE FOR THE GUARDS; Virginia Beach’s premiere “Battle of the Paddle” style Stand Up Paddleboard event.

Organized to benefit the Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association’s EDUCATION and COMPETITION programs, the PADDLE FOR THE GUARDS will feature courses for novice and elite paddlers alike, a technique clinic, and a post race beach party celebration.

Entry Fee: Entry fee is $55, and includes the Race Clinic and paddle shirt. All proceeds from the event go to the non-profit Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association (VBLA).

Course: The race courses will be “Battle of the Paddle” style courses in which competitors must navigate a series of buoys while paddling in and out through the surf zone. Elite division competitors will paddle a 4-6 mile course, and the Novice division will compete on a 2-3 mile course.

Race Clinic: A race-specific technique clinic will be held prior to the race for any participants interested in hands-on coaching in techniques such as paddling efficiency, executing race turns, body position, race strategies, board selection and more!
